Everyday Life.....

Well, since I am new to this whole blogging thing, I will take the advice of the experts and start with our everyday life. Especially since most of my friends either have small children or are expecting.  As I said before, there is never a dull moment in the Smith household! So here goes... everyday life...

Currently, we have been battling the worst case of diaper rash EVER.  It is b-a-d.  He hasn't eaten anything new, so it is not dietary.  I looked it up in Dr. Sears (a must-have for all mommies) and read that ALL babies usually get a form of diaper rash.  It is common and not indicative of food allergies all the time.  But Porter's is bad enough he doesn't want to sit down and he becomes a whiny, crying ball of goo whenever he sees me.  Poor thing.  As if cutting teeth weren't hard enough. So, I did as Dr. Sears said, kept him clean, frequent diaper changes, diaper cream and air out as much as possible.  I even let him sleep naked last night for two hours to air out more. This morning, better, but still, well.... angry looking.  I use Bordeaux Butt Paste, which is amazing...... but it is still taking forever to clear up and is STILL painful for him.

Soooo I went to work this AM feeling bad that I couldn't help my boy feel better, worst feeling for a parent, despite following Doctor's orders. But, my tried and true Mommies Group mommies came through for me. Again.  Wanna know what the miracle diaper rash cure all is?? (riveting info I know, but hey could come in handy one day when you are in desperate need!)

Yes, you are seeing that right.  Pour Mylanta on babies bums or dab with a clean towel. Whatever is in Mylanta soothes the acid that makes diaper rash painful and burn. Clears it up in no time. Supposed to work better than any cream out there.  Gotta love the natural remedies.  It is much cheaper too, I can assure you.  I am finding, while stumbling through sort-of "crunchy/granola" approach to parenting, that there is often an "off-label" cure for just about anything that is both more effective, less expensive and less harsh than a typical mainstream solution.  Just my opinion though, it has worked thus far!

So there it is, our daily struggle.  Diaper Rash. And I have a strange sense of accomplishment in my discovery! Can't wait for my boy to get back to his happy self again.  I love that sweet face!

  1. How funny (and awesome!) that something like Mylanta would be the cure for diaper rash! It never ceases to amaze me how many "tried and true" concoctions there are out there... though, I'm always curious about them and think to myself, "I wonder how that came to be trusted information" or "What would cause someone to try that?!"

As a new mom to Lily, I applied A & D ointment on her at almost every changing. I don't know what I was thinking, but probably something along the longs of preventative maintenance! I was a total nut case with her... Thankfully, diaper rash was not one of the issues we ever had with her. I can't imagine how painful that must be for babies.

  2. I will have to file that away in my memory bank. I never would have thought of that! So good to know. . .

We are going to use cloth diapers, because I have heard that really helps with diaper rash. Also, I am pretty crunchy so it suits my granola ways!
